iconicon Systima’s View of Lean icon
We believe that enterprises should view Lean IT as a competitive tool that will allow products and business changes to be developed rapidly thus increasing their competitiveness and allowing them to become industry leaders.

We believe that enterprises can use IT to gain a competitive advantage - we call this “Winning with IT”.

We also believe that enterprises that fail to improve their IT processes will increasingly come under threat from competitors who have made these improvements.

The Toyota Production System (TPS) was initially developed by Toyota for vehicle production. In 1990, the book The Machine That Changed the World named the methods used by Toyota as Lean Production.

As the success achieved by the TPS and the reasons for it were better understood, Lean started to be successfully applied to many other sectors e.g.
  • Manufacturing (Lean Production)
  • Distribution (Supply Chain Management)
  • Retail (Lean Retail)
  • Product Development (Lean Product Development)
As Lean methods have been applied to new industries and sectors, increasingly the leaders in each sector can be defined by their Lean approach. Read more ...

Lean Product Development takes the principles of Lean and applies them to developing products. Lean Product Development increases the speed of product development, while improving the quality of the products produced, through
  • Frequent deliveries of new products
  • Short Development time
  • Reduced Work in Progress (Inventory of decisions)
  • Frequent transfer of information between development steps
  • Assigning Slack to Resources and improving Information flow between stages
  • Adaptability to Change
  • Broad Task Assignments for engineers
  • Frequent incremental Innovation
  • Simultaneous improvement in quality, development time and development productivity.
Lean Software Development applies Lean Product Development to Software Development. Lean also inspired many of the methods used by the Agile Software Development movement.

The Principles of Lean Software Development are used to guide the implementation of Lean in Software Development Organisations.

Lean Software development improves the speed and quality of the software delivered.

This is achieved by
  • Creating a flow of features to fulfil customer requests using incremental development
  • Reducing the wastes associated with Software Development
  • Creating knowledge throughout the development process
  • Deferring Decisions until the best information is available
  • Building Quality in rather than Inspecting Quality in
  • Delivering Fast
  • Respecting and Developing people
  • Optimising the entire development stream (from the business concept to delivery of the software feature and into support)
